A modern play by: Doon Mackichan & Martin Millar
Based on a novel by: Jane Austen
Directed by: Emily Perrian
The play is based on the novel Emma by Jane Austen which centres on Emma Woodhouse, a wealthy, pretty, self-satisfied young woman who tries her hand at matchmaking among her friends and neighbours. After a series of humiliating errors, Emma finds her destiny in marrying George Knightley, a neighbouring squire who had been her mentor and friend.
In the play, Jane Austen has just finished writing the novel when her four nieces come in and act it out with the help of their aunt, Jane Austen, who takes the role of Mr Knightley. The nieces take all of the roles in the play apart from the characters of Emma and the male roles who are love interests.
